    DYNAM - IZER Preset

All of these presets are starting points. They are actual settings that I have used on mixes, so if your circumstances match my circumstances, then the preset may work with no change. If, however your instrument was recorded with less highs, then urn up the highs a little. Mess around with the settings. Learn what is right for you in your song. These presets are a good guide to start you on your way.

Samples are 24bit/44.1k AIFF. Download them and playback in any audio program including Quick Time and iTunes.

    RN-Snare AntiGate-1 Samples

    Before and After
Instead of using a gate on the snare with an absolute cut-off, you can taylor Dynam-izer to not only lower the cymbal leakage into he snare mic, but at the same time raise the level of the snares if you didn't have a bottom mic. Peak level is identical both samples.

    RN-FemaleBalladVocal-1 Samples

    Before and After
No more fighting to get the right vocal sound. Don't compress the peaks to get control over the vocal, bring up the low level content that you want without damaging the dynamics of the vocal peaks.

    RN-MaleBalladVocal-1

Male vocals require a slightly different treatment because of the relationship between the nuances and the loudest part of the dynamics. You don't have to fight to get the vocal sound you want. Is ten minutes too much time to spend on a great vocal sound?

    RN-SaxLLead-1 Samples

    Before and After
In a track the low level noodle-ing of the sax lead gets buried in the track. This part needs to be ridden, or the sax compressed. Compression adversely affects the dynamics of the sax. Dynam-izer brings up the parts that would have been lost without sacrificing the upper part of the saxophones dynamics.

    RN-TrumpetSolo-1

Control the horn by containing the dynamic range in an envelope that is more pleasing to the ear. You can spend the time to ride every note if you want to, but you may want to try it the easy way.

    RN-AcousticPiano-1

We are still controlling the dynamics. This is a dynamic controller. You can easily map the dynamics of any instrument into a more desirable range without making it sound like the piano is squashed.

    RN-RhodesFat-1

The bright sound of a hammered tangs of a Fender Rhodes is very peaky (is that a word?) You want a nice warm Rhodes sound without sacrificing the attack when the musician stabs the keys. Compression is not the answer, dynamic control is the answer.

    RN-SnareRAttleUp-1

Another curve for bringing up the snare rattle without limiting the dynamics of the snare drum. Good for fattening up a snare that is starting to get lost in the track.

    DETAILER Preset

Version 1.2 of Detailer has these presets included as factory settings. The setting files can be downloaded here.

    RND Standard

These are the settings that Roger Nichols is using on 90 % of his projects

    Limiter Only

This setting has the Detailer section turned off, so the plug-in functions as a three band limiter.

    Vintage Limiter Only

The knee setting have been modified to resemble those of analog limiters.

    Vintage Limiter and Details

Same as "Vintage Limiter" but with the Detail sectioned turned on.

    All Out

    The name says it all

    BITCHIN-IZER

Roger had always called this the Bitchin-izer. The final name Detailer only came about as a manifestation of a lack of a backbone of the RND management. Well through the backdoor it comes after all.

    Too Bitch-in

This rather aggravated setting of the Detail section is used to demonstrate when too much is too much.

You will see a trend here of rolling off some bottom end and raising some high end. This is because when you have more and more instruments in a song, the high overtones that tell you which instrument is which, get masked by the overtones of other instruments. The overtones are at a very low level compared to the level of the actual notes. By turning the overtones up, you help that instrument to get heard without actually having to turn up the notes.

On the other end of the spectrum is the low end that often has energy below the frequency range of the instrument. Remember "Music is in the midrange" and too much content on the low end from instruments that don't actually generate sound down thee is not necessary for the mix.

Now, a bass, or kick drum, or cello, or piano sure does have program material down there, but listen to what is being played. If the piano never leaves the middle register, then you can roll off some low end without sacrificing what was played.

This is just like lowering the level of the toms when they are not being played. If it cleans up the drum track and the drummer does not play the toms, then OK.

    RN-BGsBreathy-1

Breathy vocals sound great, but are often hard to get. Here is a good starting EQ. Used along with presets for Dynam-izer, you are assured of a perfect breathy vocal sound every time.

    RN-DeWoof-1

When you record acoustic instruments you often get too much room tone. Add DeWoof to your EQ and see how the muddiness in your tracks start to clear up.

    RN-OHclarify-1

Overhead cymbal tracks often contain too much low end and could stand to be clarified so you can hear the cymbals without overpowering the track. Try this. You will like it.

    RN-ReverbRollOff-1

Reverb of any type ends to add lower harmonics that were not part of the original sound, adding to the muddiness of a track. Use this after every reverb return to weed out those artifacts. This is meant for reverb plug-ins and external reverb devices that you are using in a "Send-Return" configuration.

    RN-RhyEGtrClarify-1

Rhythm guitars need clarifying too! Get those electric rhythm tracks to do what they are supposed to do; support the track.

    RN-VocalBasic-1

As with just about everything, you have to brighten a little and lower the low end of a vocal to get it to sit in the track without getting lost. Start here and customize to fit your needs.

    Common:

For limiting on a typical mix with moderate levels over 0 dB.
Simply adjust your in gain to max out a 0db and you should get a mix that is 2 db louder without sounding limited at all.

    Subtle:

Subtle limiting for very transient material with high peaks over 0 dB.

    Occasional Overs:

Prevents overs on material with only occasional overs. Not aimed at loudness maximization.

    Clarity +3db:

using the bias features the mid band has been reduced by 0.3db and the high band increased by 0.7 db
A “drive” of 3bd has been added.

    Soft Classic:

Here we are emulating the behaviour of a tube based limiter. The reduced knee settings allow initial transients to come through making the mix sound softer.

    Smooth Hard Drive:

For substantially increasing the loudness of a mix while remaining smooth and transparent.
Tip: Back off the In Gain until it sounds good with your material.
